But is the switch turned all the way to the left? If it is, the minute you hook up the switch all the lights inside will come on. Your '81 came from the factory with an 'interior light delay' feature.
It may have failed. You can replace the module or remove it and connect the two white wire together, and then the lights will go on and off as you open and close the door.
Hey Peterbuilt you are the man. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you but when you get my age those two hour jobs run into two days. But the info you sent me was right on the spot. everything is working as it should. Now all I have to do is put the vette back together.. thank you again.
