1970 frame off restoration on 350 manual trans, with new HEI. all new wiring, new starter , new key switch , put in new battery connected all wiring, pushed in clutch, turned key over- nothing no sound. I pulled starter tested it, works fine. Checked every connection i could , read over other peoples threads, checked over other possible mistakes other had. Still no cranking of the starter. I need expert help !
a test light on starter lug to verify the solenoid wire from key is getting power to starter.
if no, find out if power is getting to clutch safety switch.
The purple wire needs to be connected to the small stud closest to the block. The yellow wire would normally be connected to the other small stud (further away from the block) BUT you no longer use that circuit because of the HEI. You can ignore that wire.
If you have the purple wire attached to the wrong stud it will do exactly what you are describing.
The large starter lug with the red battery cable also has several other wires attached to it. Power flows to the rest of the car from that lug. There are fusible links there before power heads to the fuse box and out from there to the rest of the car.
Some light come on in the dash and setting area, no on radio, no on head lights. thanks for still trying . I haven't heard from anybody else in a while.
i did change the key switch , because it had a key stuck in it, i didn't know about putting car in reverse to get key out. I had to quit working on the car i December when covid started i had it bad. Then my wife lost her job because she wouldn't take the vaccine . Then she got a job in Arkansas , so i spent 5 months moving from Colorado. Then i could not remember were i was at, with the build. I had to pack up all parts and put them in a storage container untill i built a building. The house i got didn't have a building, as i have three corvettes . So i don't believe i replaced the ign switch, i replaced most other parts. The 2 links that come off the starter have power and the red wires that go to the horn relay & key buzzer. I didn't want to start tearing the dash apart just yet, its all new , matching numbers convertible , only carb was not matching so decided to go Hei. That just dust on the console. I painted the car original color, i replaced new soft top and had hard top. ALSO had protect-o plate stapled to owner manual in map pockets. It looks like it was their the life of the car( very rusty). new dash, 54k miles, last plate said 1978
