Pretty easy to see that I said plastic piece on the vacuum hose. Was that a S.A. answer or did you mean this....
Corvette-Dan......I can see you have spent some time on Facebook or other shitty Social Media sites, and pages.....and dealt with blatant stupidity and ********.
First off...welcome to the community.....secondly, this isn't FB and no one here wants to give you any business or be a dick.......those types don't last long here and generally hang themselves. People can post what they want here but we have some unwritten rules of conduct that pretty much just involve don't be a MF man-child.....we are a community of adults....just trying to help.....this hobby is expensive and there is a LOT of misinformation that somehow gains a LOT of traction in the Hot Rod world, Vette's attract some of the weirdest and most childish people I have ever communicated with.....
If you have a question and we answer it.......you can be confident it is coming from a helpful place.
I have deleted the filter on my vacuum system as there is very little chance that something will get up in there into my engine....but it is not a zero chance.....but for me it is just another place it can leak.

Both replies were answering that the small plastic piece is an inline air filter to keep any small bits of schmoo from being directly sucked in through the manifold vacuum. Being new to the C3 group, I think you were overly sensitive to getting razed over something. Back to the filter: it's a very basic sort of thing that doesn't have much filtering meat to it.

What I have done with those filters before is make a pencil mark across the seam.
Using a fine tooth hacksaw blade follow the seam and split it open.
Originally there was a piece of foam inside that usually dries up and disintegrates into fine dust...
Cutting a circle from a drip coffee filter holds up very well.
Super glue around one half, align the 2 pencil lines seal the 2 halves back together.
I agree with Jebby although sometimes it's hard to resist the urge to be a bit snarky. For the most part just wait for a couple responses and if someone is being a jerk someone will call that out.
Welcome to our family!
And was it really necessary to put pictures of that perfectly detailed engine? Y'all make me 😷 sick, now where did I leave that can of gunk?😂
I was wondering what that piece is too. But mine is different. Here's what I discovered. Mines a 1973 SBC. My UFO I call it is also called a filter, but it does no such thing. Mine is a one way valve. I tested it. I figured it maybe broken and removed it and it caused a malfunction. As said the one in there is a one way valve, opens for vacuum, closes when vacuum goes away. But I thought it was a filter. When i took it out I noticed that if I floored it, 4 barrels open I lose vacuum and the a/c door slams shut or open, what ever, then opens again when vacuum returns. With the UFO in there, when vacuum drops off it closes and holds vacuum keeping that a/c door in place. So mine is actually supposed to be a one way valve. But it is sold as a filter. Bizarre. I also have a 351m that has an extensive vacuum system for cruise control etc. It has 3 of those "filters" on it, and, all are also one way valves. Why do they call them filters when they aren't really filtering? There valves. This all said, make sure it's in the right way or nothing vacuum in the car will work. Lol. Did that too, oops.
I appreciate the support folks. I'll stand corrected on this one but no I don't do Facebook besides forwarding YouTube shorts from my channel to it. I've actually seen plenty of trash talk right here on the forum, albeit not on C3 yet. Like when you ask a question and instead of answering it, you get a "search the forum" "old news" or references to a page in the owners manual. Knowing that person knows exactly what you are asking but refusing to help. I've become a bit jaded here because of this. Hasn't happened to me too much but I see it all the time. Thanks again for understanding and straightening me out however.

Enjoy being here and post pictures of your car,
Jebby
Thanks Jebby.
I am not new to the forum. Been here almost 20 years, first on C5 and the last 5 on C5 & C7 and now C3. I own a 68, 99, 03 & 14 Premier Convertible.

Know that the separate forums for C2, C3, C4…etc….might as well be in different domains and there is very little crossover….
Although it is good to search….most of us will post a link of a thread for you if you ask a question…..nobody here is a jerk like that…..I have been here answering questions for 11 years….
Have fun and welcome….

I've not really understood why this filter is needed. It's not like the vacuum system is pulling from atmosphere to any great degree and large particles traveling up the hoses just doesn't seem plausible.
