Default What is this?

My guess is for an oil temp sensor since I have a clock in the 80 but want to verify.

Does your 80 have an electric fan mounted in the fan shroud? That is for the electric auxiliary fan and goes into the water jacket on the head. You would not have an oil temp sensor if you have a clock in the center gauge cluster. If your car came from the factory with an ETR radio, then it would have a oil temp gauge in the center gauge cluster instead of a clock. The clock was in the ETR radio. Cars with the analog radio would have a clock in the gauge cluster, no oil temp gauge.

We'd have also accepted "Headers" or "Spark Plug Wires". And "Crankcase Vent" for partial credit.

The heads are the same casting. Your driver-side head has the stock temp sender in the same place, between cylinders 1 and 3.

The aux fan switch (pictured) should be connected to the extra wires in the starter extension harness, L82-only in 1980.

Yes. The one in the pic I posted in question has a rubber cover over it . It has no electrical connection s going to it. I thought the Aux. fan was turned on by the sensor on the driver's side next to alternator?

Well, it's possible that the PO made your aux fan usable by putting in a lower-temp switch in a different location. The stock switch triggers at 235 degrees F, or some other useless number. If your aux fan comes on during normal operation, the PO probably fixed that.

FWIW, here's an OEM reproduction switch.

And here's a thread that well explains how the OEM one works, and how to make it useful, while still looking stock.

Not seeing the fan kick on but maybe car isn't hot enough. Where would the wiring for the sensor/switch exit the wiring harness?

For the stock switch, it's the white connector and the blue and black wires in the starter extension harness that I linked in post #4.

Gotcha. Missed it. I don't see anything. Was there a common redesign back in the day? I could swear I saw the fan moving when the car was idling but wasn't paying much attention. I let the car idle for a long while but didn't see it kick on.
I'm working on the AC so can't check if it comes on when AC is activated. For 56 k original miles it sure has a lot of minor problems.

Not sure but it appears previous owner removed the wiring harness down to the starter harness and put some kind of plug over the top of the switch. So far the car appears to have been upgraded with some mild mods and done right.
Unfortunately I don't know what he did. Hopefully the fan kicks on when AC is engaged. I'm working on that at the moment. I have the AC to fix and the air only blows out the bottom vents. I think that's the vacuum switch for the temp controls.

It's kinda hard to speculate what a PO did without photos, and if he didn't follow the stock convention.

If the Aux fan comes on at all, there must be a switch somewhere. If it is the one in the intake, that should be easy to test for continuity, or replace with one with a different range.

Be sure to read the other thread I linked.

Will do. Thankfully, my car runs cool on hot summer days.

Aux. fan is definitely coming on and kicking off. It will drive me nuts until I figure out what he did.
