How can I tell if my water pump is failing? I have it out because I did not tighten up the impeller gasket well enough and it was leaking a lot. So, before I put it back in, what should I look for to determine if it is on its last legs? I do not know how old it is and I do think that it is not the original for sure.
What is the recommended torque to put the 6-bolt plate on the back? Or, just keep tightening it a bit at a time?
Make sure both surfaces are clean and flat.......if so.....just snug it down by hand and it will seal......but why did you have it off? You can use a little RTV here but NOT TOO MUCH! Super thin coat.....or it will squeeze out inside and end up in your cooling system.
The bearing of course is easy to know if bad but the water pump seal cannot be diagnosed as bad without the pump installed......only other thing is a rotted impellor and that is obvious too.....
For $35...just go get another one.....
