Default "S" spring for driver's door

Doe's anyone know of the best way to get my "S" spring into my driver's door? When I got the car it wasn't in, so I've decided to make it a project. Do I have to taked the door off? Any special to? Obviously some way or another it has to be somewhat compressed??? :nonod: Tried for 2 hours last night trying to squeeze it in, no luck. :banghead: A diagram or something showing assembly would help. Thanks guys, ahead of time.

Brian - I will look for the diagram, but first let me tell you there is a trick (let the door do the work) and a tool (bent screwdriver) that makes it a 5 minute job. Do not remove the door.

Here is a link to instructions for a different method than I'm use to:

I installed mine in the garage with a long screwdriver and a hammer. It has been a long time ago but it seems as if it went like this. Let the bottom end go in place and pull the door as closed as you can get it and still work in the area. Use the long screwdriver to get the top end in place. Then I used a hammer to tap the spring down into place. It has been a long time, and I have slept since then, so my details are sketchy at best.

Something that's not put in the corvettefaq instructions that I did and others might consider- put an old towel or clean shop rag in the space below the spring to protect the door sill when you drop that spring while trying to get it in its place. I dropped it two or three times before I found the right curse words to get it in that slot properly. :D

I think if you mess with it for 5 minutes with no distraction that you will find the way. Just stick to it, slow down, and REALLY LOOK at what is going on. The first few times I tried, I was ready to go to a body shop and then I took a break. A couple of minutes later, mine was done.

Just in case you haven't gotten the diagram and instructions, I have a copy of the diagram on my forum webspace.
