Default 454 oil pan

I have been trying to find proper oil pan for 1972 454 v8 with power steering. I ordered one from summit andit doesn't fit right . Talked to summit tech and they say it should fit. It does not. It will not sit flat because it hits something. This is a 4 qt. pan, thinking maybe a 5 qt. pan would give more clearance allowing it more room to fit. Do I have wrong pan or am I doing something wrong? Thanks,Bob

Corvettes from 1965 thru 1974 used a very specific oil pan on the big blocks. Power steering doesn’t affect it. It’s distinguished by having the oil plug on the back, not the side. It’s shaped to fit the frame. Other oil pans will not fit without banging the crap out of them which is not a good idea. They no longer repro it, haven’t for some time. And they are expensive when you find them. You should be able to do a search on the net to see what they look like. I have an extra sitting in my garage and if I get a chance I’ll take a pic of it and post it.

I am sure the one you bought from Summit is the problem.

Thanks for reply 427. You are right, the summit one does not fit. Also as you stated " no repros" great. I guess I will half use my old dented original until I find good original. Possibly would a non orignal high performance one work? Just a thought.

After exploring options it looks like if I remove windage tray from aftermarket pan it might fit since it seems to hit tray where is bolted to bearing caps. Just a thought. Is windtray really necessary. Thanks

Its possible it may fit without the tray, not sure what affect it may have. When it comes to oil coverage I don’t like taking chances. The last thing I would want to worry about with my engine is if it’s getting enough oil when it needs it. That can totally wreck your engine and quickly. A different pan could cause the pickup to not get the oil properly. If you do go with a different pan, just make sure you ask someone who is absolute sure about it’s effectiveness. I honestly don’t know about other pans, just what supposed to be there. Like I said, I have an extra one. I’ll take it out clean it up and post a pic. I would sell it. It’s in excellent condition. I see you have an add looking for one. I see your in NY so if you are on Long Island you can buy and look at it. I really don’t want to ship it.

Thanks again 427 for your input. The last thing I want to do is screw up an orignal engine. Unfortunately I live in upstate (near Syracuse) so picking up is not going to work. Thanks ,Bob

Thanks melwiff, That pan is the same as the one I bought tha doesn't fit because windage tray is in the way , that is why I thought maybe it could be removed. Also Bob do think the 5 qt. pan will work with windage tray.

Thanks Melwiff, The 5 qt. pan is temp discontinued. Do you think another 5 Qt. pan would not hit windage tray?

For what it's worth. I bought a "proper" pan from GM performance P/N 14091356. Now that was a bit ago but sometimes it's surprising what's still available from the dealers.

Hard part seems to be finding the correct oil-pickup tube for the 5 qt pan. Apparently that's not being offered by meling or anyone I can find (want to change out the pump but my original is tig welded to the current pump \

Another source for locating OEM parts is PartsVoice, no luck on an oil pan.

I had an original on my 427 and it looked quite worn and dented. I was lucky to find a Used 1965-1974 BB oil Pan at Corvettes@Carlisle for the staggering price of $35 that I paid for it. The gasket mating surfaces were straight as an arrow and the dents were all repairable so I still have it on my 427. I found that getting the little dents out was a good way to work the metal. After a repaint it looks great decades later. Of course the only things that see it are on the road or close to it, seems like a lot of work for originality.

All the parts were there and it worked great. If you can wait until some of the big guys want to unload their garages at shows like Carlisle. I have scored some amazing deals just walking around and asking.
