Do the internal tubes in mufflers match the inlet/outlet dimension? Or are the internals the same whether the inlet/outlets are 2, 2.25 2.5 inches etc.

It will depend on the type of muffler, but typically, yes, the same size pipe will be used internally. How it is used, though, will vary.

Here's but one example of different configurations.

Some neck down and some don't. This summer I was muffler shopping and looked at many different chambered mufflers, cherry bomb, rumble, thrush etc (I needed something right then and there and no flowmasters were available in my area and I live in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin) some were a true 2 1/2 inch inner diameter, one of them, a rumble I believe, was a 2 1/2 in outer diameter but inner it necked down to about 2 1/4 ish .

I'm going for a true 2.5" system from manifold back. I've got relatively new mufflers (brand unknown but D0710 is one number code stamped on the muffler along with Made in the USA) that came with the system which included Corvette Central 2" to 2.5" down pipes. The inlet/outet size is 2" so wondered about modifying but think I'll sell these and pick up true 2.5" mufflers.

You can replace your manifolds, too, to get a 2.5" outlet.

Most muffler manufacturers are up front about what is inside. Let us know what you find!
