Default Car Jack

Sorry if this has been discussed before but I was unable to locate anything. I need to get under the car and do a few things. I'm really paranoid about where to place the jack and jack stands. I'm familiar with the jack points specified in the manual but just wondering what others have done? Is it ok to place the jack under the differential? What about anywhere under the front end? Just don't want to do anything that will compromise the frame or do any other damage.

Do not put it under the bow-shaped crossmember in the front. It will dent it.

Here is what I taught my son. Jack up the car, put the jack stands under it.
Now, while standing up, try and knock the car off the jack stands. If you can't it is safe to get under the car. If it falls, good thing you weren't under it.

I like to jack it where a metal on metal slip will not occur and I do the "nudge the car while it up" to make sure its safe. Also block the rear wheels if its the front going up. Since I worked at a garage in the late 70s and early 80s and we jacked all the full frame cars the same and a car is a car, so I would jack it either from under the front frame in front of the arm and put the jack stand in front of the where it cant slip near the front bumper extension bolts are or the similar. Then do the other side. IF you jack from the frame behind the tire the front tire will drop so its hard to get the jack stand under the A arm and maintain that height. I would not put jack stands behind the front wheel because the angle of attack is so steep they will slide and end your day. Just use common sense and again, give it a good shove to see if its stable. You only get one chance under a car.

In the end if you arent working on the tires a ramp system is the best.

Is it ok to use the rear differential as a jacking point?

Just keep in mind, safety, safety, safety.
I use jack stands and keep both my floor jacks up under it as well.
Depending on what you are doing, ramps are so much safer.
