So my 75 vert came out of 26 year storage and I am having trouble getting in to 1st gear.
I have to do allot ! of jiggling left to right back and forward to finally getting it into 1 or 2nd gear tips would be great.
Worked great before storage.
I was a mechanic years back and was able to bring this back to life after 2 hours. I re-did all the brake seals , changed the fuel pump and replace the rad so far.
The rear bumper fell apart (brittle ) I need a new one.
Any ways any help would be great.
Likely the grease/lube on the mechanism has dried out. A quick fix would be to liberally apply WD-40 from the underside and get the mechanism moving freely, then apply a lubricating oil. Just know that the WD-40 or any other solvent will remove/degrade any existing lubricant that might be present.
A more permanent fix would be to remove the shifter and linkage, disassemble, clean and grease properly but that is not a pleasant task as access to bolts is pretty limited in the tunnel.
An in-between fix would be to remove the console plate and shift rubber to expose the upper side of the shifter. This way, you can gain more access to the upper portion of the shifter. I’d do this only after you’ve sprayed it from the underside and don’t get satisfactory results.
Thank you so much I was wondering if that was it. I’m gonna try to sneak up there and slap some type of grease cause I did see some videos where you can reach up in there.
I could always squirt lithium grease up there. I’ll try that first. But again thank you so much for that advice. That’s a great idea.
Did you check the transmission fluid level?
Are you aware of how to adjust the shift linkage neutral gate with a shim inserted into the adjustment slot?
