Default Half shafts

I just recently removed spare tire and cover,I do have it jacked up off the ground and on jack stands, was observing the rear end,and noticed that the right side half shaft had more of a slant than the left side,I’m assuming that’s just a adjustment issue, maybe to much shims or something. Thanks

You will experience the halfshafts binding when jacked with the wheels off the ground. Try jacking up each side of the suspension and inch or so and place a block under the tire. Visually check the “droop” after.

Do not attempt to turn the wheels with the suspension unsupported as you will encounter the binding.

put it back on the ground and role it in one direction for about 10 feet then back to its original location then observe the half shafts. if they are different then measure from the ground, if its level, to the frame. Then measure from the ground to the fender lip. do the same in the front. An issue in the front can be seen in the back as well. if the frame and the fender are equivalent to the other side then it just may be a week spring on that side. tightening the nut under the spring will raise the car but the tires sticking to the ground will require you to roll it back and forth again to get it to settle.

IF the frame height is the same on both sides of the car then investigate
  • the differential mounting cross member to ensure the sombreros are mounted correctly to make sure it isnt an issue.
  • measure the camber to make sure its the same, check the strut rods to see if one is adjusted differently or lost its bushings,
  • check the trailing arms are still mounted correctly and those bushings arent worn or missing
start there and post pics of your rearend because these guys can see stuff that you arent mentioning

That's not a meaningful observation. The spring will rebound, and the spring bolts will poke through the holes, unloaded. Where it ends up has as much to do with the price of tea in China as anything in your suspension.

If you are running the original spring and you live in a rust belt.... might consider a broken leaf. That is not unheard of. People mentioned that the half shafts will bind when the trailing arms are just hanging there. So one side might have the ability to hang further down whilst the other side is in a bind. It has been suggested to support the the trailing arms to prevent the bind. My humble input

Good morning, so to be clear, is the spring currently installed or not? (Was your initial observation/post with or without the spring installed)?

We, as a Forum, need to do a better job of insisting on photos in posts like this.

I've recently jacked the rear using a floor jack on the differential, then two other jacks under the shock bottoms, in order to put ramps under the back tires. I am in search of loose-ness that may be the cause of some clanging and banging. Worked pretty good, got it off the ground high enough and safe so that I can do some snooping.
