Default wire fuel pump with relay, carburetor engine

wire fuel pump with relay, carburetor engine

Hello my friends,

I removed the injection on my 1982 C3 Corvette, I installed a carburetor with an electric fuel pump.
I want to protect the fuel pump with a relay, do you know what I can replace the original relay with?

Thanks a lot

Just a standard 30 amp relay. Ya know, the square ones that are about 1 inch square.
The more important question would be, how are you triggering that relay. And what is your shut off plan?
In case of a crash, roll-over etc. How is this shutting off?

Yup, one of those. Gen. Bosch if you can. And still, you need a shut off in case of an accident. Inertia switch. Switched off of oil press or tach signal.
Something to control it. Shut off is critical in case of a accident. Pumping fuel continuously with engine not running and perhaps a burst line could cost you your life or the life of a loved one.

In the event of an impact, if no one turns off the ignition, the fuel pump continues to run.
I can connect the +12v to the ignition coil

The 82 already has a fuel pump oil pressure switch wired to a fuel pump. You could also repurpose some of the ECM wiring for fuel pump power while cranking by jumping two wires at the ECM. Connect the purple 906 crank discrete to dark green/white 465 fuel pump relay drive with a 1 amp diode. Easy peasy!

Thank you, I will see about connecting it to the + ignition coil, because I replaced the oil pressure sensor

You also source a Ford inertia switch (purely mechanical I believe) that will disconnect on a roll-over.

Oil pressure switch can also be used

I used the Painless fuel pump kit 50102 when converting my 82 to carb.

Ford inertia switch will also shut fuel pump off in a front or rear end collision. Will also shut off if you hit a big enough bump in the road. Easy to find at most salvage yards too. Have one on my carbed 84 C4 and also on my 65 Gto with electric fuel pump.

Thank you very much for your answers, I will adapt a kit to cut off the pump in the event of an impact.

Are you using a pressure regulator?

I would suggest a bypass type, that will keep the pressure off the float seats after you shut off the engine, you can utilize the return line you already have from the CFI.

Do you know what the pressure you are running is? Or what the pump is rated for?

Most carbs like 5-7 lbs. Going over that could cause flooding or push fuel past the float needles when the car is off. That can run fuel down the manifold and cause hard starting and even fuel in the oil if its severe. A bypass regulator pretty much eliminates those things and keeps fuel circulating which will reduce the risk of vapor lock issues...

just a thought..

IIRC the 82 fuel pump runs between 12 & 15 psi. You have to have a regulator to cut this to the pressures mentioned by MelWff. Otherwise 1860army's predictions come into play.

I use a Mallory 4309(I think) on my carbed 84. Some other company may have purchased Mallory so not sure who makes it now. Beware of china built knock offs!!
