It’s a really bad job removing the drivers dash panel. Instead of try to fix my speedo and tach, my self, I took them to a local gauge shop. The cost was not cheap, but I know Dam well both units would work the first time they were installed. I have said many times on this Forum about how hard it was to get the dash pad installed correctly, the 50 year old wiring harnesses are like steel, and on my 73 they go over both gauges. By far this has been the worst repair I have made to my car, remember you are dealing with old plastic/vinyl that is not easily replaceable. You can break the pad just by looking at it.
My '72's tach needle broke such that the long, indicator arm was lying at the bottom of the gauge face while the hub and short arm were still on the tach shaft. I guess it just got fatigued. It's no fun to remove the dash for such a piddling detail, but they are easy to replace: gently pull off the old and gently push on the new while aligning the arm with 0 rpms.
