I had my LS5 engine rebuilt a few years ago (stock build)and just now getting it on the road and tuning. We did a few pulls on the dyno to verify function and check for leaks but didn’t do a lot of tuning. My goal is to use stock components and maximize performance. How much does the stock size air cleaner and mufflers restrict? I’ve thought about cutting the stock mufflers from the top and re routing straight thru. I’m fairly familiar with timing, dwell, dist profile(Lars papers) but welcome input on the intake and exhaust side of tuning.
Thanks in advance,Kevin
Duntov himself said the stock quiet mufflers choke 30 HP out of a big block. Not sure which BB version he was talking about but that sounds about right.
There are some stock shaped but less restrictive undercar "off-road" mufflers available, I believe from Corvette Central. They were a factory option in the mid-60s. IIRC they have one less baffle chamber inside, and have a little more growl.
Magnaflows are much more straight thru and less restrictive and highly popular here. They look stock, and have a more performance growl without being too loud. Probably the best all-around choice.
There are "chambered exhaust" pipes also available but they do not look or sound near stock, and were never an option anyway, except on Camaros.
There are at least 3 versions of side-pipes available.
I’ll check those out, not sure why the LS 5 exhaust steps down from 2.5” to 2.25 at the tips? Probably not a huge issue but this could be modified with a bit of fabrication.
