I was replacing my rag joint in my 80 Vette. I found that my steering box has what looks like a double d steering shaft instead of spline. Does anyone know if that was oem or if it was changed. Can I just drop in a different rag?
late 1969 to 1982 Saginaw Corvette boxes used a 3/4-30 input spline with a D-Flat ground into it at the high lash position.
The best rags are NOS Saginaw, expect to pay $300+ for one today. The imported rags are lower in price and quality. A flaming river u-joint also will work.

So, is this something I should be concerned with? I have a 1972 Cutlass 442 and a 1976 Corvette and both are under 50,000 miles. Never thought they might be bad. What to look for or is it just that it's on a car that old, and you need to replace them?
If I were going to replace them, the Saginaw would be the way to go but they too would be very old???

If I remember correctly, your 442 is a GM A body, same as my 70 SS Chevelle. I replaced the steering box with a Jeep box and it made a world of difference. Jerry
