My voltage regulator went out last fall (What kind of junk are they trying to peddle on us, it only lasted 56 years!). So I went to see a family member of whom works at O'Reilly's. He said I could have an ac Delco regulator for $101.99 but he could order me a 63amp alternator internal regulator style....list price is $189.81 but with his discount it's $57.88. What's the best route?
IF your 68 is stock then it has an external regulator to go with your alternator. You need to do wiring changes to go to an Internally Regulated alternator.
What are you trying to do? There are a lot better choices to make if you are willing to do wiring changes.

I Was just going to buy a voltage regulator but my cousin suggested using an alternator and something about looping the wire around and self exciting or something like that.
But really.... if you're going to do that then get 94 amp 12si. Of course, your wiring may be iffy with that 10 gauge (if I remember correctly) lead going form the horn relay to the stater node. You'll probably be ok as long as you do NOT add a bunch of loads or have a fault.
I ran one of those before I went to a 140 amp CS-144..... I'm planning to go to a DR44G, and I have all the parts, it's just been too cold to do anything since I don't really have to. You can go try something like this if you want to get adventurous https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...xperiment.html
External VR's work very well as long as the part is quality.....and ALL of the wires/terminals are clean.....this is the decider for me.....if you brought me this 68' and the VR harness was old and the copper in the wires is turning black, I would rewire it to internal or get a new engine harness.......the resistance that the old shitty wires create will make the VR fail sooner and cause fluctuating voltage.......
The only real advantage Internal has is the ability to run high amp alts.........amps for External VR systems are limited......
If you are willing to modify then I would swap over to a 94-amp internally regulated 12si alternator. My old 63-amp externally regulated alternator could barely maintain terminal voltage at idle when I turned just regular loads on (before I added a bunch of stuff). I'm talking just lights, radio, and heater fan.....barely on the edge for years.
State what you expect and there are lotsa folks on here that have done all kinds of mods.
