Another ATF thread
Okie Dokie. Here goes another one.
So, 1982 Corvette CE. 700R4 Trans. Just got it and want to do a full maintenance pass.
Lots of opinions out there on what ATF to use, so I guess this is more of a poll.
- Transynd 295 - Sounds like this is best?
- AC Delco Dextron VI - I hear this will work but may be too thin and could cause issues over time.
- Redline D4
- Lucas Oil Multi Vehicle ATF
Which is best? Or is there another one that is better?
Thanks

Valvoline Maxlife is an excellent fluid to add to the list.

When mine came out of warranty in May of '77 the 1st thing I did was install a B&M shift kit with their blue trick shift fluid.
It's the only fluid I've used & I still bark 2nd gear..

Likely easier on trans fluid than my use in work trucks, I do beat the pants off of them. My 4L80 has 310,000 miles now.

OK so gathering all the knowledge I can, here is the final analysis: 1982 700R4 calls for Dextron II
Dex/Merc non synthetic is Dextron III which is backwards compatible to Dextron II and the preferred choice.
However, Dex Merc Synthetics like Valvoline Maxlife red bottle, is Dextron VI compatible
Dextron VI is apparently not ideal for the older transmissions due to being too thin and negatively affecting components over time.
Therefore, a Dex/Merc non-synthetic is the preferred choice for the 1982 700R4.
The non-synthetic Valvoline DEX/MERC in the blue bottle seems to be the correct choice.
