This may be a dumb question but how do I stop the crank from turning when I pull the damper? Also, I remember seeing a do-it-yourself tool I think made from a large socket and threaded rod to push the damper back on. Anybody have details on this tool?
Thread three 5/16 bolts back into the balancer and use a long handle screwdriver or something similar to wedge against the frame or ground.
Be sure to protect the crank threads from the puller.
Is the engine in of out of the car? Check out this tool from PowerHouse That's what you're talking about. You could probably make one. Whatever you do, don't use the crank bolt to pull the balancer on. That will strip the threads.
