Default Motor mounts

While waiting for brake parts I decided to install new mounts ordered last year. Replaced tranny mount easy enough. Fabricated a cradle to lift engine at front just in front of the pan but on the block itself. Unbolted things and started lifting. Fan hits the shroud even though it was placed with a gap at the 12 o’clock position for max clearance but still not enough clearance to remove old mounts. I suppose the next thing is to remove the fan. Any one else had this experience?

Not had that exact experience, but I can certainly see the fan getting in the way. Easy enough to remove with just the 4 nuts – no need to do anything with the belts or pulleys – also no need to pull it out completely, just remove it from the hub, set it at the bottom of the shroud, and lean it against the radiator. Be careful when lifting the engine that you aren't also jamming the distributor into the firewall/wiper motor. Probably best to remove any distributor housing — and maybe set the cap & wires aside too.

Shouldn't be a worry about the distributor. If your worried pull all the ignition shielding and remove the cap, just lift it and set it forward an inch.
But I've never had a problem, I have replaced engine mounts a number of times however.
I do one side at a time. No need for a fancy cradle. Block of wood on the oil pan is just fine. Unbolt one side. Tilt that side up enough to snake the mount out. Doesn't need much. Slide new one in. Start bolts in block, set it down. Get the frame bolt in. Tighten bolts. Then the other side. Same.
Fan hitting shroud? Darn, I lost that in the late 80's. Thought it was a pain in the butt.
As stated, just 4 nuts. Nothing to difficult.
I do remember changing drivers side mount on mine way, way back when. I still had a factory shroud then. But it's so long ago now I honestly don't remember if I had to pull the fan or not. I do know I've always done one side at a time. And have always used a block of wood on the oil pan lifted with a small floorjack.

Pull the hood first. Now's a good time to convert to electric radiator fans!

I had to pull my engine forward to get the solid mounts installed, which was a lot easier with the hood out of the way.

If you put a solid mount on the drivers side you'll never have to do the job again.

Got the passenger side in today—lots of wiggling required. Will start drivers next. Darn PS pump in the way of everything!

Default Final update to close thread

Driver side much easier after unbolting PS pump and unbolting fan assembly. Crazy how the #1 and #3 plug wires snake up between the block and the mount. Changing plug wires would be awful.

Exactly. What were the blackboard chalk pushers thinking? Lift the engine to swap wires? Cut the ends and re-boot?
This is why thousands of us went to the aftermarket over the valve cover sets, etc.
