I’m looking to rebuild and upgrade my 700R4 in a stock but hope fully upgraded HP version of the stock xfire setup. The car is Top Flight potential so trying to stick with original tranny…
Any recommendations for suppliers is appreciated.
id like to sneak up on 300 hp eventually…if that is an issue.
Just find a good transmission shop that will rebuild what you have with upgraded parts. Get someone good though, not Joe Blow's Tranny Shop. 300hp is no issue for a 700R4
Your trans came with a 27 spline input shaft, make sure they put a heavy duty 30 spline shaft and drum in it. My guy also did something with the discs but my memory fails me at the moment. If you are changing the HP of the motor you might also want a different stall convertor. Also, I'm not sure what your motor plans are or how you are getting 300 from the X-fire but if you are going with a carb or some other FI then you will also have to consider the TC lock up options... I think I'd settle on my motor plans before I did the trans so you dont end up doing some things twice...

300hp is not that difficult to do, but a stock ECM is not the way to go with that task. It will take some tuning to get you there along with some other small mods, but at that point, you will go over 300 as well. IMO, going over 2200 stall is not needed on a stock CFI motor, but the choice is yours. Moving on to the 700r rebuild. going to a 30 spline is a good idea along with a beast shell and 9 clutch pack. It would be advisable to go with the wider band as well for OD. Getting a shift kit like TransGo would be another good idea. Hope this helps a little. GL
I am working a really good shop that specializes in hot rodding and worked on my 70 Chevelle SS when I got in over my head.
I’ll be sharing these inputs and get this thing shifting right and more bullet proof.
I have a burning desire to have this thing go Top Flight as it is absolutely bone stock, correct and beautiful…but honestly…I need more sport in my sports car…
Hidden HP to 300 is next. This forum is awesome for those tips. Here is the car:
300 hp is fine with a early transmission, I would install a Trans Go SK700 kit , Sonnax Beast Sun Shell and add a extra clutch in 3rd gear drum on top of good build and add a 2100 stall torque converter. Just built one just like it for a 56 wagon with a healthy 283
Your '82 was the first version of the 700R4. It had a number of improvement made after the first years of service. A GOOD (meaning, reputable...not necessarily well-known branding) will know what changes to make. The TV valve is one of the important changes.
I have a habit of buying 1st year products....it's become "a thing" I do now....thanks for this input....added to my list of "will do's" on this project.
I bought the car for it's C3 significance, it's impact on me at 24 yrs old and now it's potential to be the best it can be in "stock appearing" clothing.
In real estate ... they call it good bones. Got that, now on to an improved sports car.
