I never know what I will find once I get in a job. When I hear that the unit was worked on or rebuilt a lot of red flags go up.
This one is a 74 diff, it was supposed to have been rebuilt by a vette shop. One interesting thing I found, all the bearings with the exception of one, were the 50 year old originals. The other interesting thing, someone drilled a hole up through the bracket hole into the diff. This is a drilled hole, it was masked by RTV. It is beyond stupid. It will be corrected, and USA Timken bearings used.
I replied on another thread today a little bit about pricing today. This level of work I would expect from your local garage who last saw a corvette on Rt 66 in reruns. To see it from a specialized shop, is pathetic. There is cheap, stupid and then there is doing it as it should be for a fair price. Only you can decide what you want to do and you still have to know what it should look like done.
Unfortunately a lot of car owners ( not just corvettes) are too trusting. I usually do all my own stuff but I have a 2012 C6 that needed a lot of A/C work done. I insisted that they keep all the old parts and show them to me. Sure, they could have pulled some old parts off the junk pile but I knew what the new ones looked like and these were the same only old. It was a reputable dealer and a fair price, but I have seen too many people get ripped off to think that I am the only one smart enough not to get ripped off. Buyer beware. Thankfully there are reputable people like you looking out for people. You get what you pay for. I was self employed my whole life and I never wanted to be the cheapest guy in town. If you can explain WHY you charge so much, most people would go along. Thanks for sharing.
They drilled a hole through the boss for the camber plate mounting bolt? Were the threads damaged? Wondering if a bolt was snapped off, owner went too deep with the drill?

no the hole was not damaged by a broken bolt
This was a clear drilled hole just over 1/4”, the tapped hole is 3/8-16
GTR1999 Once again Thank you sir for sharing your professional advice with us! Your knowledge of differentials is truly amazing.
After buying my 1968 C3 and hearing the posi plates chirp and chatter I added more Posi lubricant and it did not go away. I had a buddy who worked at the Chevy dealer behind our shop. He got the differential re-built and it has worked nicely. The claim that they used all new bearings, seals and lots of consumables. I hope they fixed my differential like you do but I doubt I will be that lucky. I have an odd 427 that came with a 3.36 rear in it.
Your posts are frequently educational and I learned something Today so Thank you again!
New post on the forum "My car is leaking oil from the spring....."
(Maybe they created a drain hole and thread sealed the mounting bolt....)
WTFK what goes on out there
M
We used to see a lot of used bearings being used. It is actually a common practice in the newer Getrag units which I could never understand either. Those rebuilds start at $2k and to have used bearings in it being acceptable by both parties is absolutely crazy. I would not want it in my diff and as the builder how could I hold up a warranty on parts you have no idea on what they have been subject too in the past. It is stupid an anyone who accepts or does that is not thinking clear. I have seen that hole before, there are a bunch of threads on this forum about it. They are using it as a hidden drain hole for the diff which I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Getting the proper tool to remove the oil in the diff is not hard and every Harbor freight sells them now.
