I'm in the middle of doing a lot of work on my 1980 Vette. As I was disassembling the engine (for cam swap, and headlight actuator conversion to electric) I started disconnecting vacuum hoses from the engine and headlight vacuum system. WOW! - most of my vacuum hoses were only still connected due to the shape of the hose. I'd say 75% of them just fell off with minimal effort. The 3-point vacuum fitting on the rear of the intake manifold was loose, and there was no way it was allowing the 'right' amount of vacuum to develop. Also, most of the intake manifold-to-cylinder head and carb base-to-intake manifold bolts were loose, some I could spin with my fingers.
Seems I have found at least some of the reasons I was getting 4 mpg, and took 2 weeks for my headlights to open.
Anyway, just a reminder to check all of your vacuum connections and make sure bolts that need to be tight/torqued are actually tight/torqued.
I did a little research and found this gem on Engine Vacuum Systems. Good reading on the subject....
