Re: Dialup, DSL, Cable.... what do YOU use? (SmokedTires)
Wow! Cable seems to be mopping it up. I had no idea broadband was so readily available. I guess it's just this town I'm in. I'm still stuck with dialup. Town owns the cable company and Verizon has no interest in offering broadband to Old Fartston. They just recently offered dialup! (Earthlink has had a number for a while) The only options are I$DN or Satellite, both of which are too expensive. (heh heh, excuse to move. )
Re: Dialup, DSL, Cable.... what do YOU use? (Cookwithvette)
I quite tapping all this talent on CF when I was on dialup because all the graphics made it virtually impossible to enjoy the volume of intelligence shared daily.
Re: Dialup, DSL, Cable.... what do YOU use? (Cookwithvette)
Seeing as broadband is not available to me in this area I have to use dial-up. The ping is sent via a 3 legged turtle and the download request is delivered back via an arthritic 97 year old grandmother in a wheelchair with half the spokes missing on one wheel and no tire on the other. Nothing but high-tech here! :banghead: On some of the threads with a lot of graphics I have been forced to shave twice before the page loads. Don't want to be looking scuffy!

You won't get me off cable 'til you can pry my mouse from my cold, dead fingers! :yesnod: :yesnod: :blueangel:
You think I am exagurating? HAH, I challenge you. When I looked for a house to buy, I checked the local cable company to make darn sure! that there was Cable Internet at that address!
Just my opine, of course  :blueangel: :jester

I added OC (Optical Circuit)...For fellow tech weenies we run Fast-E from the desktop, this traffic is aggregated on Gig-E border routers, and than goes on to one of our local OC 192 Core Backbone Routers located on another floor...
We're in the process of turning up 4 Fujitsu Flashwave 4560's. I should be able to access the Forum before I even touch the mouse :D

Dial up for three more days than...WAHOOO  DSL is comming to town. My area is the last to get the phone lines upgraded so finally I'm vaulting into the 21'st century. After all this time.. maybe I can finally post some pics..

This is off the subject somewhat, but those of you who are running antique Pentium II's or worse might think about buying a 'puter while the economy reeks. When things do turn around(& they will) you will not find complete decent systems like a Dell Pentium 4 1.8G processor, 60G hardrive, 48X CD-Rom, speakers & 17" monitor for $699. And even laptops are now under $1000 for 1.6G machines. Add a docking station to them and they are the way to go.
And of course... if you can afford the costs... cable is the way to go as of right now.
Re: Dialup, DSL, Cable.... what do YOU use? (bgrice)
If you all are thinking I am wrong about the *cheap* processors you can get these days, I picked up on E-bay tonight a 4 month old IBM A31P mobility 1.8G Pentium 4 laptop, Intel 845DDR(double data rate), 60G, DVD-CDWR, ATI-FireGL mobility, 64Mb 3-D, Bluetooth, 15" 1600x1200 UXGA screen laptop for $1250 and 2 years of warranty left. IBM sells these same laptops for $3600+. You can find mobile laptops at Best Buy these days, but not this high end.

Cable. The typical basic cable package has significantly better throughput than the typical DSL package. This is until the neighborhood kids come home from school and play massively multi-player games. FYI, check out how fast you're really going at any of these:
