Yes you are supposed to use distilled water, not corrosive when used with glycol based coolant

At Corvettes@Carlisle a few years ago I ran across a pair of GM Original1967-68 Aluminum Cylinder heads (had little snowflakes on them) and they looked great until you turned them over and saw how they had been ruined by good old fashioned corrosion. These heads might be salvageable to someone with a lot of tools and money. All you had to do is weld up the damaged area and then re-machine it. It had a slight issue where you could "see" into the combustion chamber from the top of the head. This was much more common in the early years and back in the 60's when coolant HAD to be changed or you had trouble. It shows that neglecting your cooling systems can get really expensive. Today many folks take cooling systems for granted until it jumps up and bites them. "Preventative maintenance" is the key phrase. It is often cheaper to fix it now than after it breaks.
