The ‘77’s came from the factory with R12 Freon and electronic ignition.

I'm a long time 77 owner. Yes indeed the car came factory with R12 refrigerant. Early 77's have a VIR air-conditioning system. Late 77's have a more modern system. But both used R12. But that was 47 years ago. Many have been converted by now.
77's came with a GM HEI, electronic distributor. Actually a pretty nice, reliable system.

as noted above the electronic ignition is High-Energy Ignition, HEI and why mechanical tachs became electronic tachs with the troublesome tach board, buried in the dash. In 78, the dash redesign allowed owners access to the tach board through tach/speed cluster front lens. The electronic distributor eliminated the need for points...nice upgrade.

What's your VIN, Usually an indicator if your A/C is old style or newer

Late in 1976 production, the Delco Air radial-style Model R-4 compressor, painted semi-gloss black, was introduced. The radial compressor is shorter and wider than the axial style. The R-4 compressor foil label is yellow, silver and black and contains the same information as the A-6 label. Some A-6 compressors have been seen with the R-4 label.
The photo is the R4 compressor...shown is a 77 label! Check it out!
