Default More sidepipe muffler questions

So, right now, I've got Hooker sidepipes without mufflers in them and it's a bit loud. I'd like to quiet things down without sacrificing much in performance.

So, I've seen the Hooker glasspack mufflers and the JCLs. The question I have is regarding baselines in sound and performance.

Assuming the current setup I have is rated 100% in decibels and HP, what percentages would I be looking at for the JCLs and Hooker glass packs? i.e., how much LESS sound and what is the impact on performance.

Thanks.

A while back somebody posted actual dyno charts of the same car with Hooker sidepipes, with Hooker Glasspacks, without open exhaust, and with JCL spiral baffles.
I don't remember exact numbers but there was almost no difference in power between JCL spirals and open pipes. In fact I think there was a slightly better torque curve using the baffles.
With the glasspacks there was quite a large drop in HP.
If you search the C3 Archives you might find the posts.

Since I haven't had my car on a dyno I can't really give you any percentages in performance or sound, but I can give you some sound/video files for you to listen to, just click the link in my sig. I believe Jim has some dyno results on his site from a couple people, and from talking with Chris (69myway) this past weekend I believe he is going to dyno his in the near future. Where I live open sidepipes would get you noticed not only by your neighbors but the local police wouldn't be too happy, they don't even give me a second look with the baffles. I think Chuck Harmon might be the person you are thinking of doing the dyno testing.

I am one of the guys that has dynoed the baffles against the Hooker glasspacks and reverse flows and open tubes. The JCL baffles are alittle louder than the reverse flows but not as loud as the glasspacks, and my baffles only were down 8 horsepower from open tubes and made 92 more horsepower than the reverse flows. Don't mess with the Hooker mufflers. The other thing is that the baffles are tunable, that is you can remove the cap on the incoming end and increase flow and sound. Chuck Harmon's L88 only lost 6 hp with his uncapped baffles to open pipe. My 502 was tested with the baffle capped. You will not be sorry with either the sound or the horsepower with the baffles. Bill. If you search under my name you can probably find my dyno charts as they were posted. i don't have access to them right now to send you,

You are comparing apples to oranges, that is how big of a difference (assuming a solid performing motor to begin with) we're talking about. I had the Hooker baffles in my 454 for all of 40 miles. I have the glasspack ones, not the reverse flows. Cost me gobs of HP over 4000rpm. The engine was laboring up there. So I yanked them out and ran open for awhile...hello, power! Blowing the tires off in low gears without issue.

Then I installed the JCL's and removed the cap that 69ttop502 is talking about. Chuck Harmon explained how to do this (its very easy). The sound is much quieter than open-pipes at idle and normal cruise. However, when I stand on it, its almost as loud as open pipes. So instead of being obnoxiously loud all the time, its only like that under full throttle. ;) I cannot tell any difference in power vs. open pipes, but my motor is mild compared to most big-blocks and I have not dyno'd it yet.

But the Hooker glasspacks are not for any big-block, IMHO.
