Planning to replace the fuel pump on my 1970 454 stock engine. Looking at the front of the block in the area of the fuel pump, I don’t see a bolt that you can remove to install a longer bolt to hold the push rod in place while installing the pump. There are two holes, a lower and upper, just inches apart but no bolts in them. The last pump I changed in recent years was on a SBC that had that feature. Does the BB have the same feature?
And now for the big question. What brand of pump is the best replacement that will give years of reliable service and bolts right in place?
The answer to your first question is that the BBC does not have the ability to hold the fuel pump push rod in with a bolt like the SBC. you need to hold it up with a screw driver then slip the pump arm in or use some grease on the pump rod to hold it up in the block whilst putting the pump on.
for your second question assuming you are looking for a factory type replacement others will be able to give you better info than me. the last replacement pump i had lasted many many years and was still working when i replaced it. i do not know what brand it was. i have heard of varying degree's of quality on many of the factory type replacement pumps.

Put a dab of grease on the push rod and shove it in there, the grease will hold it in place. I had to replace mine on my 68 big block. Not a lot of room. My wife ended up putting it in for me!!!! It was a pump from O'Reilly's....it only lasted 27 years.
BBC has a pipe plug basically under the fuel pump. Remove that plug and the pushrod should slide right out. Dab of grease on the rod, slide it up thru that hole, install the pump. put the plug back in and done.
