Looking to upgrade to 17“ wheels what are the best looking wheels on a C3 ?
I have Centerline 17 inch wheels that i bought 30 years ago. The problem now and even worse in the future is limited tire choices. My street 17's are 255 or 275 fronts on 9 inch wheels and the rear I started out with 285 and then 315 on 11 inch width which is about the max without adding fender flares. Then I added flares and went to 17X13 width and 345 rear tires.
old picture with 315 rears before flares, I just put a couple of bails of hay on the rear and haul them out to the cows.
If starting from scratch, start with 18" wheels. There might be only one tire choice for stock-ish sized tires (OD and width) for 17" wheels. There are LOTS of choices for 18".

Only one manufacturer makes my rears and they are 335 width. I have choices on the front 255 or 275. All in 17 inch.

18's seem a reasonable balance between ride comfort/suitable sizing/cost.
In the 10/12 years I have been using 18's on my '68 some of the sizes, especially the rear 285/40's seem to be limited....and correspondingly expensive, 275/40/18's are far more plentiful and only slightly narrower/less tall. You need a crystal ball to know what sizes/diameters will still be available in future years........
Lots of 16's available including Hoosiers. I autocrossed on those and Toyo Proxes for years. Finally bought 18's
Not anymore!
My 2002 Wifes firebird came with 16 inch wheels and for 21 years I was able to buy BFGOODRICH G-FORCE COMP-2 A/S PLUS 255/50/16 Same size for by buddy with his BMW. So now I'm having to down size to 245/50/16 which are sold by tire rack.
My favorites are the old American Racing 200S rims. The car now has Mini Lite clone rims.
I went with 17 inch rims years ago when 15 inch rims became and obsolete size for performance tires. At least now I can still get Michelin PS2 in 335X35X17 for the rear.
Hopefully, being a Porsche tire, it won’t go away anytime soon.
For someone doing the swap now, or if I had to do it again, I would go with 18 inch rims.
Come to think of it, you may want to work your way backwards. Find a tire you like. Check the available sizes. Then look for the rim size (17,18) that you like.
