Is it possible to replace rear wheel bearings in a 70 without removing the shock mount . I know it requires a special tool and from watching videos it looks like one big problem. Thanks
If you’ve never done the rear bearings before, they’re nothing like the front. Much more involved that requires more precision tooling. It’s one of the things I sent out rather than doing myself.
I was able to get my shock mounts out without issue after spraying every threaded connection with a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. No cutting, torches, or massive hammers. Unless something changed from ‘70 to ‘76 you shouldn’t require any special tools, just a punch to drive the mount out all the way through the strut rod.
If your rear wheel bearings need servicing I would also be checking the condition of your trailing arm and strut rod bushings. Chances are they could use replacing too.

Sometimes the shock mounts come out very easily sometimes they don't. It took a 20 ton press to get them out of my 68. On my 66 I hit the mount with a hammer and a block of wood and they came right out. You won't know until you try. As far as replacing the bearings, I agree with the above. Unless you have the tools and skills and experience, send them out to a reputable rebuilder. I use Van Steel with great results. They are local for me. Jerry
To answer your question, Yes.
Is it advisable to do them on the car, No. Can they be done on the car, Yes.
The shock mount is knurled. They will be flat when you remove it and may not bite in as they were designed to, you may be opening a can of worms. It's either all in to correctly rebuild the arms or possibly a problem developing.
