Hi, I'm hoping someone can help. I have a 1982 Corvette I have been trying to get the AC working for years I have resealed the R4 and replaced the hoses, accumulator, orifice tube and condenser. I put 6oz of oil in the compressor and it was working (Making cold air) but had a leak around the big plug on the back of the compressor. So I purchased a new GM R4 compressor, here is my ? I removed the old compressor I resealed and no oil drained out. Should I put oil in the new compressor, rotate it and drain it or put 2 oz in the new compressor which would total 8oz.It requires 6oz per the manual. Thanks
Mineral oil R12,lucky to have many lbs.of it.

I went thru this and drained what was in the new compressor, if any, I don't remember, and refilled it with the correct amount. Here's a great site for a/c help.
i would put the 2 ounces in...assume you are not R12 anymore , but i would still flush compressor with new correct oil to make sure same..then 2 ounces

R4 compressors aren't a sump type compressor. The oil is mixed with the refrigerant and flows though the entire system. Since is doesn't just sit in a sump in the compressor only some residual oil might come out. Getting the oil amount correct is critical as it directly affects the ability to make cold air.
In regards to putting oil in your new clean system the R4 specs is 6oz oil. But you can't put 6 ounces in the compressor and install it on the car without the oil running out all over. Put only 3oz in the compressor and the other 3oz into the accumulator.
