I think you will find many opinions on this subject, but personally I like the Ecklers unit (which is what I have on my '71). The airbox is a separate item. You can get the ecklers hood through Gruhala and save $$$.
Not required, but sure is nifty. Without the box, it is like any other hood. You run a regular aircleaner on the motor. With the airbox, and the special L88 aircleaner, the airfilter is inside the hood, and air is drawn from the rear of the scoop (i.e. outside air).
Zwede, did the L88 hood give you any more clearance?
Yes, it gives 2" more room compared to the big-block hood.
I don't know which hood is best, however, I got mine from (Of all places!) JC Whithney. It is available in long or short style, but I got the long style. I have not yet installed it, but it looks reasonable, with metal plates in all the attachment spots under the fiberglass. The Air box is a no extra charge option, and the totla cost was $459 plus $75 shipping. It is made for them by Legendary (215-491-1630)
