I am working on the A/C system on my 70 Corvette and replacing as many parts as possible. The items on the car are all 1970 vintage. Will be working with R-12 and want to replace the POA valve as the condition/operation of the original is unknown. The system has not run for many years.
My research has found that today, the current A/C parts suppliers are installing a look-a-like POA valve and converting the system to a cycle on/off of the compressor. I am looking to avoid that if possible.
Anyone know of a source for an original POA valve or a service that overhauls original valves?
Also, do you know of a source for the double lip rubber front compressor seal? One article I have says that this is a better seal than the original ceramic model.
I had a frozen POA valve that was the main reason why my AC would not operate on my 72 454 car. In my case, the system was open and the POA got moisture/rust and ceased up. I bought a used one from Palm Springs CA (desert area) that was good. There is a bench test to check the operation with compressed air. Here is a post I saved and pictures how I hooked the valve up to test. Made up with plumbing parts I had. Yellow hose to compressor. When I opened High the valve popped open. It's been a few years since I did this so memory is a bit foggy.
Also, I think Pace Car Jeff in FL cuts them open and rebuilds originals. POA Valve Testing | Team Chevelle (chevelles.com)

I think I found Pace Car Jeffs email and phone number. I left him messages but have not heard anything in return. My preference would be to have a rebuild valve to install as it is beyond difficult to remove that valve with the engine in the car. Will work to test my valve as you have outlined and see if it even works.
Thanks for the info.
Found Pacecar Jeff and he had a NOS valve. He claims tested n guarantee to work. Now it is just a case of flushing the evaporator n condenser n begin reassembly!
I flushed out my system as well.
Aso, done on my bench,
I drained the oil from my compressor and added/flushed new oil a few times until it was flushed clean, then cleaned the screen and added the recommended amount which is only a few ounces.
Install a new drier and O rings when you seal it up. Test vacuum and charge with R12 without oil added.
