Just installed a new fuel pump on my 72 small block 350. Used permatex fuel resistant gasket sealant. Started it up and ran perfect, I let it sit overnight and noticed a fuel leak at the threaded connection at the pump to the fuel line that connects to the carb. So…I disconnected the fuel line at the pump and expected fuel from the line to the carb and what was in the pump to drain out like it did when I replaced it (pressure side). Well, after draining out over a gallon of gas with no end in site, I reconnected the fuel line to stop gas from draining ! My question is why does the fuel continue to drain, there should not be that much fuel on the pressure side,! What am I missing here, it drained about a quart and stopped when I did this before to change the pump?
The simple answer, your fuel pump is lower than your gas tank.
Not sure why it would’ve stopped the first time you disconnected it though. Perhaps the tank wasn’t able to pull in air to displace the fuel it had lost and formed a vacuum which prevented any from leaking out. A problem which has since corrected itself.

good answer thank you, I t very may be the cause. I will just disconnect the suction / supply line and plug it. It was just very odd the fuel kept draining when it didn’t previously! Thanks for your response, I guess I’m not losing my mind, lol.l

No problem
A 3/8” drill bit on the shank end makes a perfect plug for the supply line btw
