Default Steering issue

My 1973 coupe has some play in the steering. I've seen a rack and pinion setup for C3s. Has anyone made that change? I'm less concerned with originality and more concerned with drivability. Would the car steer better with a rack and pinion system vs the original setup?

Do a search of Borgenson steering box on the forum. It may be a compromise between rebuilding your own box and a rack and pinion. Before you do anything with the steering box, check all components of your steering and suspension including the rag joint. Jerry

When you say "has some play in the steering", could you be a little more specific. Does the play occur at speed (above 45 - 50mph? While sitting without the engine running?

Correctly dialed in there is no play driving straight
Getting to that point is more than a kit can offer.
I just posted about steering boxes in the C2 section

I put a flaming River rack n pinion on my 78 C3. It was very easy, no drilling required. It comes with a cradle that uses bolt holes already in the car. @ on the driver side from the steering box that is removed and 2 on the pass side from the idler arm which is removed. It wasn't cheap but I am satisfied with it. Feel more like a newer car than the old oem stuff. You just have to make up some hoses to attach from the pump to the rack. I have a C4 pump ( an L98 engine) so it required a little more thought). At the end of the day i did it, and now I don't even have to think about steering issues. Some have even put a NON power steering rack in. Just another thing to boggle your brain. Good luck.

I have the Steeroids version of the Power Rack and Pinion on my 1968 and i love it. I tried to rebuild the parts but could never get rid of the dead spot in my factory power steering system. I had the box rebuilt by VanSteel and the rest of the parts were replaced including the Rag-joint. In the end my power Rack and pinion is a nice upgrade and I am going to keep it. I like the feel of the rack and pinion system over the original type system as it is more precise. If you do go to a aftermarket Power Steering system consider putting a power steering cooler on the engine and the rack will last longer.

Installing it was easy and everything can be undone and the standard steering can be restored any time someone wants to. I had to change the flow rate of the power steering pump to 2 GPH which was easy. TurnOne is the place to answer any tough questions and source hard to find parts. They are the EXPERTS in the steering world. They have the flow reducers that you might need to fine tune the system. An awesome resource for anything Steering.
