Has anyone replaced the seal on the rear window on a 1973 to 1977 rear window? I have removed the window and seal and cleaned it up. I purchased a rear window seal kit from Zip, which includes the butyl tape as well as pinchweld primer. It seems simple enough. Apply the primer and then the seal. I was hoping there was a video online specific to the C3. The primer is black and seems like it could get messy. I also want to make sure I place the seal in the right location to prevent ponding. My old seal had a lot of low spots and gaps, causing a leak. I also wonder if the window will stick to and hold in place to the butyl tape, or if it will require someone to hold it in place while the rear window surround is installed.
Got the new window in successfully. It turned out ok and doesn't appear to be leaking at the moment. With the primer, the butyl stuck really well, so I was able to install by myself. That primer is a mess though, so be careful with that stuff. You do not want to get it on anything besides the mating surface. I think if I ever have to do this work again, I will consider doing the removable window conversion.
I didn't even think to head to local parts store. Just noticed the rear window seal kit on Zip Corvette and grabbed it. I am guessing with urathane, I would have needed to brace the window until it cures, as you noted. I guess one upside to using butyl, is the window is held in place by it immediately. Urathane may be more useful on the windshield, where gravity holds it in place while it cures.
