Ive done this with some of my 304 stainless brewing equipment where I found an imperfection/surface contaminant which can cause a rust spot and it works for me in most cases.
One thing I did read up on about the OBX set up was poor fitment. There was a thread a few years back stating this. I know that the Doug's headers I have, had the same issue, basically the collector isn't straight and points in towards the car which makes alignment difficult and that's one of the reasons why mine leak as well.

The more I look into this, the more I'm leaning towards a set of Patriot pipes with stock manifolds or old school Thrush pipes with covers.

My obx pipes fit perfectly. Easiest headers I ever installed.
