Default Half Shafts

Hello. During the long winter I was going to change out some of the u-joints. If the half shaft joints are done is it worthwhile to have the half shafts balanced? I know the drive shaft would be good to have done but had no idea about the half shafts and if there would be any benefit. Thanks in advance.

Half shafts were not balanced from the factory. They turn too slowly to cause a problem. Of course, do a visual inspection and replace if there is anything obviously wrong with them, bent or rusted etc. Jerry

Some use balancing 1/2 shafts as a sales tool. I never have them balanced; it is not required. How you take them apart is important so you don't bend the flange. I just took out 1/2 shaft & driveshaft joints yesterday. I usually burn them out but my oxy/ace was out so I did it the old way, using a press.

I had stronger half shafts made by a company over around Tampa I think it was PST. They weren't much more than having the u joints replaced.

The 1350 joints are still the weak link. Solid Spicers are strong but can be broken, we know firsthand.

tks
Many times, the joints are really tight in the yokes and flange. Many flanges and yokes have been wrecked by inexperienced people. Using a plate is critical and while not required, using a oxy/ace torch to carefully cut the joint cross out will transfer heat to the caps and they will tap out. Done correctly, there is no damage to the parts, incorrectly and new flanges or shafts may be needed.
I got the shafts blasted and just need to know how the finish is going to be. Originally, they were not painted but for a driver it works best.
