Hey I’m new to this thread, I have an 81 that is bone stock, I am looking at buying hooker competition long tubes and having an exhaust shop do an exhaust system. Is 3 inch pipe too big? The collectors on the headers are 3 inch so would it be bad to run an adapter down to a 2.5 inch and then back through an x (or h?) to flow master 40 series? I’m new to cars in general and especially exhaust, I know this is a lot of questions but I’m just curious if anyone has run a setup similar and could give some advice.

Three inch pipe isn't "too big", but it's basically unnecessary with your stock engine. Two and a half inch pipe will have plenty of flow capability for your application.
Edit: If you're going to run Flowmasters, definitely put an H or X pipe into the system to reduce noise and drone. I prefer an H right after the collectors..

do you think that running that 3 to 2.5 adapter will cause any issues?

If you don’t want drone go with Corsa or Borla mufflers.
okay, are the borla attaks as loud as people say? I want loud (I’m 16 and want it to be slightly obnoxious) but it’s also my only car so I don’t want it to be annoying to drive lol.

I’m running long tubes, cam, CAI and Corsa Sports, they are loud and somewhat obnoxious but all the noise is out the rear, zero drone, sounds great.
For reference Im running Borla touring on my Ram hemi, zero drone and quite loud also, but it’s all out the rear. Nothing in the cab.
I will continue to use either of these companies mufflers as they both are quite in the cab but sound aggressive out the rear…

Alright sounds good, I’m gonna try to get it done before I put my car up for winter so I’ll get to researching it. I appreciate your help.

just another option, you can install cutouts, manual or electric to make it open headers. Extremely loud. But then run quieter mufflers like magnaflow or borla.
best if both worlds, quiet for long drives or on the highway, open headers when you want it obnoxiously loud.
I use dynomax single chambers with cutouts. The dynomax do drone some but are not too loud
I agree with the us of the Chambered Exhaust system. I have one on each of my 2 Corvettes and I absolutely love the sound they make. They sound just like side-pipes but the noise is behind you which allows you to hear the radio, if you would like to. Try that with a set of side-pipes...
No Mufflers hanging out back, No drone and less parts make the Chambered exhaust a good option. I have a 12.25-1 Compression ratio 427 running through a set of the Chambered Exhaust pipes and it didn't hurt the power at all. Both of my systems are made from Aluminized Steel and are over 25 years old each and still going strong. Even the 1988 C4 with it's anemic L98 engine sounds like a race car!
