Differential caps
I don't know how many of you rebuilt your diff or had one done, by one check that is important is to check the bearing cap fit. The diff I am working on now was "rebuilt" in the past, I stamped the caps before taking it apart, as I always do.
Today, with it cleaned up I got back to the caps. I put the left on and it seemed ok, moved to the right and it was way off. Really no where close to correct. Then I went back to the left and found it was wrong too.
So, was this diff a core without caps that was rebuilt? I have seen that too many times. Was it line bored wrong in 1972? Maybe, seen that too but not too much. OR could the last guy have mixed up the caps? I swapped them left to right, and BINGO, perfect fit on both. That's how much they can be off. Why the right bearing didn't burn out I can't say unless the build didn't have many miles on it.
They're 001" rock now though.
Just something you need to check.
