Hey guys-ls t56 swapped my c4 years ago and I’m looking into Ls t56 swapping my ‘72. The swap part is too easy but I’d like to keep my original gauges with this car. Is that an option? Car will be on Holley terminator X.
You’ll need mechanical senders to keep your oil and temp. I installed an oil sender on the adapter above the filter for oil pressure. You can also get oil temp in the same location. For the engine temp install the mechanical sender on the rear passenger side cylinder head. Your Holley should have VSS out for speedo and Tach outputs.
For oil pressure I did something like Torch suggests.
I was able to achieve a calibrated reading on my original gauge by wiring two senders on both heads in parallel. You can see two in the picture sitting in my hotplate.
This was 12 years ago. I probably have more details in one of my notebooks. I plotted across a large temperature difference and was pretty happy that I got a linear response (on log paper) that tracked the gauge reading. The multimeter in the picture is being used to measure temperature.
On my LS swaps for the temp sensor I drilled and tapped the right side head for the NPT size needed for the stock sensor.
Oil pressure as said above.
So are the stock speedo and tach cable driven? I assume they are. At least the speedo is. Are there adapters out there that can convert a VSS signal to a cable driven speedo?
On my 71 C3 with a LS1/4L60E swap I took the easy way out and replaced all the gauges with Auto Meter gauges.
Good luck with your swap. My 71 turned out great.
Any of you guys using a t56? My t56 in my c4 doesn’t use a vss but I’m using a Holley prodash for the Speedo. Really need to keep the factory style gauges in the ‘72.
