Default Underhood Lamp Question

I recently put on a new lamp assy. to replace the missing one on my 81. After mounting it correctly it wants to go on when the hood is closed and off when it is open - and no I dont have it mounted upside down. It appears to have a gravity switch to make the contacts so maybe I have the wrong one. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The under hood has a small mercury switch that is within the lamp asembly and it may be upside down. When the hood is open, the mercury moves down within in the mercury bulb and connects 2 contacts. When the hood closes the mercuy flows in the other direction and only makes 1 contact, thus disconnecting the light bulb circuit. Check the assembly and make sure that the mercury switch is not upside down.

My 81 is in storage or I would take a look at it. I have the original assembly. From what I recall,it is set up so that the top of the bulb faces the front of the car. This is probably the way you mounted yours, but just in case you didn't that is the set up as best as I recall.
