Default Smells Rich at Idle

I have a stock 1976 L82, except for true-duals, that smells rich at idle.

The timing is all-in at 36^0 and the idle jet screws are set to (2) turns out from fully seated. If I turn the screws clockwise (lean) anymore the motor will die at idle. The motor seems to accelerate and run perfectly and the spark plugs do not appear to be gas fouled; see pic.

The choke is set properly and opens after a short warm-up period.

Perhaps the float level is too high?

All suggestions welcome!

Jason

If you have removed the catalytic converter and installed true duals, the car exhaust is going to smell like "old car exhaust." Note that the CO levels will be high if it's running rich, and CO is odorless. You can't judge a slight rich condition based on the smell of the exhaust - smell is usually related to HC emissions, which do not correlate to lean/rich.

Indeed I have removed the catalytic converter.

Thank you so much for your post, Lars!

Based on what you just posted, I think I'll quit worrying about it.

Jason, I think you misunderstood. Piersonpie wanted to delete his own post but that option was removed maybe 6 months ago. The only option now is to overwrite our previous message with something else like "deleted" or "We really have to bring back...". Only an admin can delete specific posts of others.

Sorry, I didn’t mean that towards you. I made a response that was superseded by a reply that was made while I was typing. I swear you used to be able to delete posts, but you can’t anymore.

I just bought a ‘76 L82 myself. How do you like it after doing the dual exhaust?

I love my '76 L82 and the true duals with minor carburetor tweeking made it a nice peformer. It's my go-to car for many activities and it garages with an F430, a 992S and a '66 MGB, so pretty stilff competion. It's just plain fun to drive and the styling seem almost timeless.

I'm just surpised by the seemingly strong exhaust smell at idle. My 1966 MGB doesn't have strong exhaust odor, nor did my 1957 Speedster that I sold recently.

I suppose it's just a characteristic of the L82 fueled by a Quadrajet carburetor.

Ha, mine 4-speed can be a bit balky to get into first gear at a stop sign/light. But once underway, it shifts perfectly.

Here it is on my lift.

I had a two cat system with headers and straight pipes that was loud as hell making fine tuning a pain in the *** so I ended ditching that set up(kept the headers) for a 2.5 stainless x pipe system with no cats two mufflers and that helped a lot with tuning. The biggest difference with smell and the way the vehicle runs was adding the emissions canister , hooking up the pvc system correctly , good gas and proper adjustments of timing and carburetor.

After those changes and some patience the vehicle will now start right up after sitting for a week without tapping the gas. If I tap the throttle to set the choke the car will start right up go through the normal warm up cycle as it should. I did set the choke to a slight lean condition even at over 6000ft altitude and it runs awesome!
