Default Neutral Safety Switch - Relocation

For my '81...

After my auto to 4 speed manual swap I just connected the purple and yellow wires from the automatic shifter switch under the console and all works fine.

I want the option for the NSS to be functional and was thinking it would be easier to relocate a "switch" into the ash tray on the console just to have the safety option. Just a manually operated switch nothing fancy.

Was thinking a small switch panel to fit inside the ash tray with some other switches or even a USB charging socket.

Can someone confirm the wire gauge? I think it is 12 AWG.

Does this run off a fuse in the fuse box or is the circuit protected by a fusible link in the starter circuit?

Any idea of the amperage?

Thanks

You could have opened the harness and relocated the 2 wires to the clutch pedal switch as the factory setup. ?

That's what I would do.

This wiring diagram might help. It looks like it works through the ECU, though, with a relay.

My 80 came with the clutch safety switch bypassed, but it is available.

Thanks for the links.
I have the safety switch on the pedal assembly under the dash. Its just not connected
ECM is long gone on my car.
I have an older set of wiring diagrams that have the wire gauge as well as color but only through 1974. The wires in the 81 also look to be 12 AWG. So I think that's a safe bet.
I will look into unraveling the harness once I get it apart.... IF IT EVER WARMS UP!!

I would like to put a fuse on the line but don't know the amps....

The way I did it was to cut the 2 wires off the original auto shifter and add female spade terminals to the ends. This duplicates the factory "extension harness" that would attach to the pedal switch terminals. Maybe 7" long. The harness at the shifter is unwrapped for about 18" or so to pull out the 2 safety switch wires and relocate to the pedal area. Rewrap the harness. The original factory plugs go together and function as intended. Unfortunately, this is very difficult to do after the pedals are already installed.

Your typical 12vdc relay draws less than one amp. 12awg wire shouldn’t have more than 15 amps continuous.
I’d stick either a 5 or 10 amp fuse in line.
A fuse should protect against hard shorts, both will do that.

im a fan of switches in the ash tray, thats where i located my line lock switch.
