Starting Idle
When my car starts cold it seems like the idle is too high; about 1800 rpm. After a few minutes I tap the pedal and it drops to a lower range.
Just wondering if the initial idle is too high and/or harmful to the engine?

My 73 idles at about 1500 when cold. You can adjust the cold idle with the screw at the top right rear side of the carb.
This is your fast idle when the engine is cold. Screw the screw out to slow the idle. I would think 1300-1500 should be enough to keep the car running when cold.

My car doesn't fast-idle, is something set up wrong? (I'm pretty ignorant in the carb-world)

As TRW suggested, adjust the fast idle setting lower but not so low that you have a problem keeping it running smoothy. While fast idle speeds on a cold engine may not seem like such a good idea, it may be the lesser of two evils. Cold oil and high rpm is definitely a recipe for accellerated wear but so is poor fuel atomisation.
