Default Where do these screws go?

Good evening,

I’m most of the way through my budget beater ‘76 interior refresh and I’m about to start putting panels back together. I have most of the interior hardware sorted out. It’s laid out in the general area that it goes in the car front to back.

I’m left with these 15, which I’m guessing is 16 and I lost one of the larger ones along the way. I know one of them is the sill plate screws, but which ones? And where do the other ones go?

Ain’t that the truth

But for the life of me I can’t think of anywhere else there would be any screws than I already have.

Those really do look like interior panel screws. I tend to put them in little zip loc bags as I pull the interior apart. And mark location, like left sail panel, one long screw goes..... , and so on. You will find those empty holes as you assemble. Next time you will tag and bag. Ya just never know how long it will be apart sometimes.

On my 78 the long skinny, ones are for the sill plates. As for the rest, if that’s all you have left over you are doing good.

I purchased an interior screw set from one of the corvette vendors. They came packaged and labeled and besides looking good it made things easy. I would not hesitate to do it again.

I’ve been looking at websites that sell screw kits, the forum, and referencing my other ‘76 for where things go. That’s why I’ve been able to identify pretty much everything without bagging and tagging.

@kanvasman I think you’re right about the longer ones being the sill plate screws, although I might be replacing them with machine screws if I have to use thread-serts on the sill plate screw holes. Even after looking through everything I can’t see where those larger, coarser screws would go.

For my 78 there are 6 large diameter coarse threaded screws for the armrests, 3 on each side. There are also 4 long screws ( But not the large ones) for the dash pad,, 2 on each side.

Thanks, but for my ‘76 I have the ‘68-‘77ish style interior with a whole different center console design. I’ll check the other car again tonight if I’ve got time.

Those black screws definitely look like interior trim screws. Similar screws were used to install the a-pillar moldings, the windshield header molding, the dash pads, console side panels, the shift console plate, etc, etc, etc. As mentioned above the 8 longer ones could be sill plate screws, if they're slightly less than an inch long (about 7/8"), but I think either the a-pillar or header molding used the same length screws as the sills.

I did some checking on the sizes of these screws, and I think I’ve cracked the case.

The bigger ones are 3/4” long, a #10 sheet metal thread, but with the head size of a #8. It turns out these ones are the sill plate screws, not the other ones.

The other ones are similar as they have a #8 thread size, but a #6 head. 1 inch long.

Looking through my pictures it appears that these are the 6 dash pad screws, not the chrome ones that I thought they were. They’re supposed to have a collar, but they’ve probably fallen off. The other ‘76 was no help since all those screws have been changed out already by a previous owner.

That accounts for 6 of the 8 at least, and I think I know where those 6 chrome screws are actually supposed to go. If not then they go in the spare parts cup. Thank you for the help everyone!
