OT: Garage Door Opener?????
Ok someone on here has had to have some garage door experience. My door opener works fine, almost. The door goes down and up just fine. But it will not stay down unless I hit the button to keep it down. Something has changed. It will go down and when it hits the floor it wants to come right back up. Driving me nuts now. Can someone offer some insight to what I may need to check or adjust. Thanks.
My opener has an up and a down limit switch. If the down switch is set to far when the door hits the floor it will rise. It has something to do with self reversing feature so as not to crush someone/something. If the torque required to move the door is above a set point and the limit switch contact is not made then the door raises. Try turnng the down limit switch for less travel. On my Sears openers the switches are accessed from the side. No need to remove the covers.

I agree with RMS73. A garage door openne has limits. You can stop the garage door so it does not close all the way. You can leave a 1 inch gap if you want or have it slam into the floor. There are external adjustment screws and they say on the side up or down. There is also an adjustment for the pressure that it exerts before it reverses in case something is in the opening. Just look at it closely and you will see the adjustment screws then back off the limit for down.
It is only an adjustmenet problem.

Re: OT: Garage Door Opener????? (Ed T)
Thanks guys, I see the adustments for the amount of downward force and for opening force. I will get back up there and get it straightened out. It is a sears door opener and almost 10 years old and makes the most racket.
You may want to make sure the tracks are solid (no loose nuts or bolts) and that the rollers and not binding anywhere.
It sounds like you need to adjust the stop point (it's trying to close the door beyond the garage floor). Be careful that you don't make the amount-of-pressure safety setting so low that you can crush a cat or a kid before it stops and reverses
