When switching to LEDs why is it suggested to replace clear bulbs with red when the lens are already red?
Bulbs have always been clear with colored lens. Accept natural amber bulbs that were used with clear lens.

LEDs are brighter and generally have a cooler light color temperature compared to incandescent. They also generally have a more directional light. Putting a clear LED behind a red lens has the possibility of making it look washed out and more pink than red.
There are many factors involved and you might be fine with the look of a clear LED. I personally would use red if you can get it.
You can't tell the difference in white and red LEDs? Or you can't tell the difference in red LEDs and the incadesent {sic}
Meaning regardless if the LED color is red or white, if its in a red tail light housing it looks the same (to me). I was primarily motivated to change the tail lights and the front directional to LED because they are brighter and easier for other drivers to see. I will note on my 73 I did use the amber LED's in the front because the lens is clear so a white LED will obviously not work. But with a red tail light lens I could not tell the difference in a red or white LED. I also agree with Eliredandblack, Superbright LED's are a decent product. Just note, if you change to LED's for ANY of the directional bulbs, you will need to use an electronic flasher.
A red LED emits photons in the red wavelength range. A "white" LED is actually a blue LED with a yellow phosphor.
If you want to emit red photons, and shine them through a red lens (which will absorb non-red photons), a red LED is more efficient. Either will work, but a red LED will likely be brighter to the eye.
question....is an "electronic flasher" an aftermarket electronic part and where might it go?
It would replace the flasher located on the passenger side above the kick panel. My 73 still had the OE flasher, a little blue can with two spade lugs. The electronic flasher I used is an adjustable (meaning the rate at which the directional lamps blink on/off is variable). I think I bought it from Superbright but you can prob get them from almost anywhere.
