Default Speedo not working

Hey y’all,

I have finally gotten around to fixing up my speedometer and I’m just wondering where to start. It’s totally not working it’s stuck at 0 no bouncing none of that. I have the factory manual with an l82 and it’s a 1979. I do not believe it had cruise control but I’m unsure since it has an aftermarket steering wheel so I don’t know if it has a transducer. So I’m wondering
1. Where is the speedo gear in the transmission/ how do I access it?
2. If that’s not it what do I have to check behind the dash?
3. What are the other probable causes?

thank you all so much,

If I misspeak, I hope others will correct me.

Three things could be wrong:
  • Cable seized or broken
  • Speedometer head needs repair
  • The gear in the transmission is detached or stripped.
What I would do is disconnect the speedo cable from the transmission. Check to see if the cable spins or is locked up. You may (not sure) have to disconnect the cable from the speedometer before trying to spin the cable.
If it spins, hook it up to a drill to spin it and see if the speedo moves. If the cable spins and the speedo does not, that is your issue.

IF the speedo moves and the cable is free then in might be the gear in the transmission.

Make sure if you are spinning the cable with a drill that you set the drill for counterclockwise.

In 1979 if you ordered a manual transmission, cruise was not available. If you determine it is the cable then the length is 72" which can be purchased. Some vendors will say a 60-80inch is correct but it is not. Behind the speedo press on this clip and pull the cable out.

This youtube is from a 79 L82 4spd. He chose an 80inch. Make sure you reinstall cable in the clips to prevent binding.
