Default Wiring Trouble

I am working on a 1979 Corvette. I am going through the standard wiring pains, trying to get everything sorted out and I come across a splice in the red wire that is going to the positive terminal on the alternator. I am wondering if this splice is factory, (I don’t think so but I’m not sure) or if this was done by someone along the way? If it is factory, does anyone know where the wire is supposed to go? I have posted some pictures below. Hopefully they explain what is going on better than I can.
You can see here where they took 1 wire and turned it into 2.

This is the end, which looks factory that seems to go no where. It was bundled up with the rest of the wires.

The other end of the spliced wire goes to the positive terminal on the alternator.

I don't have a 79 and on a 77 there is only one large wire going to that post on the alternator. So the smaller one you show does not exist factory on a 77.
that said, a constant hot wire in that location could only be a hot lead for the underwood light, which is a option, part of the convenience package. If your car doesn't have that option, then yes it would remain bundled up.
Truth is ALL cars have wires to nowhere! Old ones new ones even brand new motorcycles have wires to nowhere !
whenever you find a wire that goes nowhere, first ask.
"What doesn't work".
If everything works. It's highly likely this wire was part of the original harness but was never needed.

Thank you for your response. I am certain that you are right about the light on the bottom side of the hood.
That extra red wire that is on the terminal of the alternator is something I wired up to check my headlight actuators. I have been debating where to pick up a constant 12V for those. I think I will just use the extra wire that goes nowhere. Again, Thanks for the help!

I think sometimes GM designers thought oh crap we need power for this light. Let’s just tap into this wire. 😣

Crazy! I bought a new harness, and am yet to get at it, but enjoy learning from threads like this in preparation for that day/those days. Thanks for posting OP and glad you got the info you needed. Really love this forum (sometimes).

I have learned a ton from this forum. I don’t post very often. Most of the time, I can find the answers by reading old posts. It’s great to have a community like this.
