'78.. haven't got to tha numbers yet to identify.. has a steel case??? looks jus like any other muncie from tha outside 'cept for tha color difference of "steel vs aluminum"... its original as for all i know..
maybe a saginaw?.. don't remember ever seen' one of those...
thanks for that.. i have discovered that they did build 'em both steel and aluminum.. but they were very vague (numbers wise) on how ta recognize 'em except with a magnet and/or pick it up... go figure, ha.
this whole car is strange.. numbers match for 4 sp. with welded in cross brace but motor has brackets attached for trans fluid lines?.. motor numbers also match.
While it won't help anything that has changed, for $50-, you can get a copy of your dealer invoice from GM, that will tell you every option the car came with. You can also get a "Vehicle Information Kit" with all of the original specs (that PDF is free). Link in my signature.
Where is the reverse shift lever located ?
That will ID what tranny you have - 3 levers on the main case - it's a SAGINAW !
It probably is the original tranny - a SAGINAW POS that they called a Muncie because conveniently it was assembled at the original Muncie plant

Like I said - where is the reverse shift lever on the tranny ???
Until you answer that - give us something to work with - it's just HOT AIR !
don't need to... jus read tha pdf.... quote from pdf..
"The 1978-79 Muncie is a 2.85:1 wide-ratio manual transmission and used for L48 (350/175, 185, 195HP) applications. The higher ratio was intended to give low er-powered Corvettes some nice punch. This Muncie is a cast-iron case with a 7-bolt cast-iron cover. (Figure 5) The cover is distinguished from a B/W cover by the location of the reverse shift lever shaft. (Figure 6) The reverse shaft protrudes from the Muncie cover (along with 1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th), while the reverse shaft is located in the extension housing on B/W cases.
Some reasons to post a photo, even though you got the answer you wanted, include:
1. Disprove false statements in your thread (your transmission DOES exist, here's the proof!)
2. Make the Forum a better place by showing thread resolutions, with photos, that help the larger Corvette community, including the folks who don't post.
first i don't feel tha need ta prove it to anyone.. i can see it with my own two (very old) eyes.. i'm not gonna go out and crawl around on tha floor jus ta PROVE it ta anyone...
thanks ta tha ones that actually tried ta help me identify it..

But that PDF really does cover most of it.
Your dissertation is way above the level of this "conversation" LOL

Nothing strange about the car. The 1978-79 cars, when mated to an L-48 engine, came with an RPO code MM4 M20 76MM Saginaw transmission. The engines came with the auto-trans oil cooler line clip on the oil pan passenger side regardless of the engine going into a manual transmission car. Just like manual transmission cars with A/C coming with the long green wire for the automatic transmission car idle solenoid on the carburetor. Some of these factory choices are made for streamlining the assembly process and others are for saving money.
My 1978 is all matching numbers and dates including the engine and transmission. The oil pan had never been off until I replace the pan gasket and it has the auto lines clip.
